James Ilgenfritz releases Thirlwell composition for solo contrabass

a1596461489_10JG Thirlwell was commissioned by James Ilgenfritz to write a composition for solo contrabass. The piece, entitled “Xigliox“, has finally been recorded and will be released on Ilgenfritz’s second solo album, Origami Cosmos on Infrequent Seams on March 24 2017. “Xigliox” is described as “a work that constantly careens from lyricism to ferocity, from precision to frenetic abandon.”

The album also feature pieces written for Ilgenfritz by Annie Gosfield, Elliot Sharp and Miya Masaoka.

Origami Cosmos is described as : “From hypnotic drone works involving Just Intonation and use of multiple bows to astounding feats of technical virtuosity, this collection of works brings hyper- complexity, improvisation, and lyrical beauty together into a deeply personal tour-de-force of musical invention. “

JGT reads WSB

William-S-Burroughs-william-s-burroughs-24368992-1329-1389JG Thirlwell  will take part in William S.Burroughs reading marathon presented by The Poetry Project as part of WSB100, New York’s month-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Burroughs, the iconic writer of Naked Lunch, Queer, Junky, and many other experimental works of great American literature. The event will take place at the sanctuary of St Marks Church in New York City, on April 23 2014, beginning at 8.30pm. JG will read with interpretive guitar accompaniment from Sam Mickens. Also on the bill are Anne Waldman, Bob HolmanGenesis Breyer P-Orridge, Matt Mottel & Kevin Shea, James Ilgenfritz, Jack Womack & Elliot Sharp, Iron Dog, Nick Zedd,  Penny Arcade, Simon Pettet, Steve Dalachinsky and many others.

Mivos Quartet Play Thirlwell

On Feb 29 2012, this extra day of the year, Mivos Quartet will be hosting their first fund-raising event at the gorgeous new Issue Project Room space on 110 Livingston, Brooklyn. Mivos will play three sets, presenting works by JG Thirlwell, Annie Gosfield, Tristan Perich, Patrick Higgins, Alex Mincek and Elliot Sharp. They will also be joined by Ned Rothenberg on clarinets, Timucin Sahin on guitar and vocalist/composer Sasha Siem, performing their own works.

The fundraiser is aimed at covering Mivos Quartet’s travel and lodging to Darmstadt in Germany this year.

They will perform a string quartet version of JG Thirlwell’s classic Manorexia track, “Zithromax Jitters“. Mivos Quartet includes Manorexia / Steroid Maximus alumni Olivia DePrato and Isabel Castelvi, along with Joshua Modney and Victor Lowrie.

JG Thirlwell plays with Elliot Sharp ensemble

JG Thirlwell will be sitting in with Elliot Sharp in honor of his 60th birthday in an improvised ensemble at a concert at Issue Project Room on March 5 2011. Under the title Bootstrappers, the ensemble will consist of JG Thirlwell-electronics, Carl Stone-electronics, Anthony Coleman-piano, Melvin Gibbs-bass, Don McKenzie-drums, E#-guitar (30′).
Bootstrappers is scheduled to happen at 10.40pm, but the whole show begins at 5pm, showing many sides of Mr Sharp. You can view the whole schedule here.

JG Thirlwell plays Christian Marclay at The Whitney Museum, NYC

Marclay_ScreenplayJG Thirlwell will be performing Christian Marclay’s Screen Play piece at his Festival exhibition at The Whitney Museum in New York City. Marclay’s Festival exhibition consists of many of his graphic scores, sculptural objects and film archives of his actions and performances, and features concerts daily. Screen Play is a graphic / film score to be performed as a trio. JG, who will play samples/electronics, will be performing in a trio with Kenny Wollesen (percussion) and Okkyung Lee (cello) on Sep 1 and 17, and with Kenny Wollesen (percussion) and Elliot Sharp (guitar) on Sep 16.
